When can you board a cruise, and how early is too early?

You board at the time on your boarding pass. Every major line now assigns you an arrival slot or has you pick one, and arriving early just means waiting — sometimes outside the building.
Only two lines publish a fixed opening hour: Holland America says boarding officially begins at 12:00 p.m., Virgin Voyages at 2:15 pm. Everyone else gives you a window.
The names differ — Carnival's Arrival Appointment, Royal Caribbean's arrival time slot, Virgin Voyages' Terminal Arrival Time, Holland America's assigned time — and the effect is the same. Here is what each line publishes, where your own time lives, and what happens if you show up outside it.

Every cell was read on the cruise line's own check-in or embarkation page, on the date in the sources below. Lines missing from this table are missing on purpose: we list only lines whose published guidance we could read directly, so an absence here says nothing about how that line boards.

Times and rules change, and a line can vary them by port or by ship. Treat this table as what each line published on the dates listed below, and your own boarding pass as the instruction that governs your sailing.
So how early can you board a cruise ship?
The useful answer is that you board at your assigned time — only two of the lines here publish a fixed hour at which boarding starts, and everybody else describes a window: Carnival's Arrival Appointment, Royal Caribbean's arrival time slot, Celebrity's staggered arrival window, Norwegian's eDocs embarkation time.
Why won't anyone simply say "11 a.m."? Because the previous sailing has to disembark and clear customs first, and that timing belongs to the port, not the line — which is also why the same ship can board at a different hour in a different city.

Your boarding time is a slot, not a door opening
Every line now either lets you pick a slot or assigns one, and the terminal is staffed to that plan. The mechanics differ in ways worth knowing before you book a flight or a hotel checkout, and the slot is worth treating as an appointment you booked — on most of these lines it is exactly that.
- Carnival: chosen inside online check-in, which closes at midnight Eastern the night before
- Royal Caribbean: picked in the Royal App and printed on the mobile boarding pass
- Celebrity: windows are deliberately staggered; app check-in stays open until the morning you sail
- Holland America: no choice — a time is assigned roughly two weeks out, in the Navigator app
- Virgin Voyages: you set a Terminal Arrival Time in the app

What actually happens if you turn up early
Nothing dramatic, but nothing useful either. The lines that address it say plainly that an early arrival does not get you aboard sooner.
The one thing an early arrival is genuinely good for on most lines is luggage: porters at every port take checked bags well before check-in opens. If your hotel checkout is 11 a.m. and your slot is 1 p.m., dropping the bags and finding lunch is the plan the terminal expects you to have.

The deadline at the other end of the day is the one that bites
Missing your arrival window costs you a wait. Missing the boarding deadline costs you the cruise, and the lines say so in those terms.
None of these is a number you can carry from one cruise to the next. All of them are printed on a document you already have.
- Royal Caribbean: fully checked in and onboard no later than 90 minutes before port operations close — a time that belongs to the port, which is why Royal Caribbean names Vancouver's 5:00 PM close as an example instead of quoting one number

Where to find your own boarding time
Every line puts the time in the same two places: the app and the boarding pass it generates. If you have completed check-in, you already have your answer, and it outranks every general rule on this page.
If you have not checked in yet, that is the task to do first — Royal Caribbean encourages it at least 3 days ahead, Celebrity's website check-in closes 3 days out, and Carnival's closes at midnight Eastern the night before you sail.

It depends on the line, and each one anchors the deadline to something different. Royal Caribbean requires all guests to be fully checked in and onboard no later than 90 minutes prior to port operations closing. Carnival requires you to be on board by the Final Boarding time printed on your boarding pass. What happens if I miss my boarding time slot?
Missing the slot is not the same as missing the ship. Royal Caribbean says guests who arrive late may need to wait until the line is able to accommodate them in a later group — a delay, not a refusal. Missing the boarding deadline is different: Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian all state plainly that a guest who is not aboard by their published cutoff will not be permitted to sail.
When will my cabin be ready after I board?
Later than you board, on every line. Holland America publishes the clearest figure of the lines we read, anticipating cabins at approximately 1:00 p.m. and asking guests not to visit until an announcement is made. Carnival has early-appointment guests eating lunch on the Lido Deck before cabin access is granted, so plan a carry-on that covers the first few hours aboard.
