Every month Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska has published

Provenance: Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska’s schedule reaches Wednesday, September 30. A month past that is not empty — it has not been published yet.

Where the ships tie up

  • Docking or anchoring

Sitka calls split two ways: most large ships tie up at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal outside town, and the rest anchor in Sitka Sound and tender their passengers straight into downtown.

The terminal's operator says a ship marked DOCK on the Sitka cruise calendar is berthing with them and needs a shuttle to reach downtown, while a ship marked ANCHOR arrives downtown by tender.

This is the single fact worth checking before your Sitka day. Tendering puts you downtown on arrival; docking does not.

  • Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal

The Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal is at 4513 Halibut Point Road, which its operator puts at approximately 5 miles from downtown Sitka.

The terminal has restrooms, seating, free wifi, food and shops at the gangway, and the operator says walking trails and coastal paths start within steps of it.

It is a private terminal rather than a city dock, and the 5-mile figure is its own.

  • Berth codes the Alaska schedule uses

    STOSTIOSDISDPETPIPCTYANC1BR2BR3BR4BR1CR2CR3CR4CR

Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska codes Sitka's dock berths STO and STI for the terminal's outside and inside faces, OSD for the Old Sitka Dock and CTY for the City Dock, and numbers the anchorages by where their tenders land.

The anchorage codes come in two families: 1BR to 4BR tender to the bridge dock, and 1CR to 4CR tender to Crescent Harbor. Four numbered anchorages in each family means Sitka can hold several anchored ships at once.

An anchorage code is how a schedule tells you in advance that you will arrive downtown by tender rather than walk off at a dock.

Getting around Sitka

  • The Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal runs a complimentary shuttle to downtown, continuously while the ship is in port, and asks you to reserve a time.

The operator gives an average ride of 10 to 15 minutes, says the shuttles are ADA-accessible, and drops passengers downtown at 330 Harbor Drive. On busy days it may also require a reservation for the return.

A reservation time is a place in the shuttle queue rather than a departure time. Your reserved slot, and whether the return needs one, are on the operator's booking page for your own call date.

  • Sitka's tenders land at two points downtown: the bridge dock by the O'Connell Bridge, and Crescent Harbor.

The scheduling agency's berth key is what names the two landings. No City and Borough of Sitka page read here describes either as a cruise landing, and none prints a walking distance from either into town, so none is given.

  • The City and Borough of Sitka's Harbor Department runs the five boat harbors in town, Crescent Harbor among them, and publishes a Sitka cruise ship calendar.

The city runs the harbors; it does not run the cruise terminal, which is the dock most large ships use.
