Boarding at Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay has 3 cruise terminals, and your terminal decides your drop-off lane, your parking lot, and the check-in door you walk through. Start with yours, then use the cruise line tips below.

Flying in? Tampa International Airport (TPA) is about 20 min away. Build that drive into your check-in window, not on top of it.

  • Complete online check-in through your cruise line's app before arrival — Norwegian uses the NCL app, Royal Caribbean uses the Royal Caribbean app, Celebrity uses the Celebrity app

  • Boarding groups are assigned online — earlier check-in usually means an earlier boarding group

These are the lines with ships in our Port Tampa Bay catalog. Check-in windows are set by the line, not the port.

4 ships

Embarkation day tips from cruisers

Royal Caribbean

Download the Royal Caribbean app and complete online check-in

You'll get your boarding group assignment and can set up your on-board spending account ahead of time. This alone can save you 30+ minutes at the terminal. Upload your photo for facial recognition boarding — it makes the security line faster.

Arrive at your assigned boarding time — not earlier

They've gotten strict about this. Showing up early means waiting in the terminal with no access to the ship. Your assigned time gets you on the ship fastest. If you have Crown & Anchor status, you may have priority boarding — check the app.

Pack a carry-on bag with swimsuits, meds, and essentials

Your checked luggage won't reach your cabin until 3-4pm. Pack a day bag with swimsuits, medications, sunscreen, a change of clothes, and your phone charger so you can start enjoying the ship immediately.

Head straight to the pool deck or Windjammer for lunch

The main dining room is packed right after boarding. The Windjammer buffet and the pool deck grill have shorter lines, and you'll snag a good lounge chair while everyone else is still exploring.

Book specialty dining and shows on Day 1

Popular restaurants and shows fill up fast. Open the app as soon as you board and reserve your top picks. The chef's table and specialty dinner shows sell out first.

Download the Royal Caribbean app before you arrive — you'll need it for check-in, daily schedules, restaurant reservations, and as your digital key to your stateroom.

Celebrity Cruises

Download the Celebrity Cruises app and complete online check-in

The app handles your boarding pass, eDocs, health questionnaire, and on-board spending account. Complete check-in at least 24 hours before sailing. Upload your passport photo — Celebrity uses facial recognition at the terminal.

Arrive at your assigned boarding window

Celebrity assigns specific port arrival windows during check-in. Stick to yours — arriving early just means waiting. If you have Captain's Club Elite status or a suite, you'll get an earlier window automatically.

Pack a carry-on with swimsuits, meds, and your Resort Deck outfit

Checked luggage arrives mid-to-late afternoon. Bring what you need to enjoy the first few hours: swimsuit, sunscreen, medications, a charger, and a change of clothes. Celebrity's pool areas are more upscale than most lines, so pack accordingly.

Visit the Oceanview Cafe for lunch instead of the main dining room

The Oceanview Cafe (buffet) is open immediately and has better variety with shorter waits than the sit-down options right after boarding. The food quality at Celebrity's buffet is noticeably higher than most cruise lines.

Reserve restaurants and shows in the app before you board

Celebrity's specialty restaurants and evening shows can be booked in the app before embarkation day. Le Petit Chef, the Rooftop Garden Grill, and Eden all fill up fast — book your preferred nights as soon as reservations open.

Download the Celebrity Cruises app before you arrive — you'll need it for online check-in, your digital boarding pass, restaurant reservations, and as your stateroom key.

Carnival Cruise Line

Download the Carnival Hub app and finish online check-in

The Hub app is your boarding pass, daily schedule, and on-board wallet all in one. Complete check-in at least 24 hours before sailing. Upload your documents and photo — the facial recognition at the terminal speeds things up significantly.

Consider Faster to the Fun if it's available

For about $60-100 per cabin, FTTF gives you priority boarding, early luggage delivery, and priority dining reservations. It sells out quickly and isn't available on every sailing. If your confirmation email shows it as an option, it's worth it — especially with kids.

Pack a carry-on with swimsuits and essentials

You probably know this one, but it's worth the reminder: checked bags take hours to reach your stateroom. Bring swimsuits, sunscreen, medications, phone chargers, and a change of clothes in a small bag you carry on. You can hit the pool and waterslides while waiting for your luggage to arrive.

Make Guy's Burgers your first stop for food

Guy Fieri's burger joint on the pool deck is a great free option, and the line is shortest right after boarding when everyone else floods the buffet. The SMC (Super Melty Cheese) burger is a fan favorite. Grab one on the way to the pool.

Set up the Hub app's chat feature for your group

Cell service doesn't work once you leave port (unless you buy the Wi-Fi package). The Hub app's free chat feature lets everyone in your group message each other on the ship. Set it up before you sail and add everyone in your party.

Download the Carnival Hub app before you arrive. You'll need it for check-in, your digital boarding pass, daily Fun Times schedule, on-board chat with your group, and restaurant reservations.

Disney & Others

Disney: Download the My Disney Cruise Line app and complete online check-in

Disney requires online check-in and assigns strict port arrival times. Complete everything in the app at least 48 hours before sailing. Upload travel documents and photos for every guest. If you have MagicBand+ wristbands from a Disney park visit, they'll work as your stateroom key and charge card on board.

Disney: Bring MagicBand+ if you have them

MagicBand+ wristbands work on Disney ships as your room key, payment method, and for interactive experiences. If you don't have them, the ship will issue you a Key to the World card at check-in. You can also buy MagicBands in the terminal gift shop, but they're cheaper on Amazon or at Disney parks.

Disney: Head to Cabanas buffet and the pool deck first

The rotational dining system means your main dining room assignment is set, but Cabanas (the buffet) is open right away for lunch and has much shorter lines than the sit-down options. The AquaDuck water coaster and pools also have the shortest lines right after boarding.

Norwegian & MSC: Download the cruise line's app for digital boarding

Norwegian uses the NCL app, MSC uses the MSC for Me app. Complete online check-in, upload documents, and set up your on-board spending account before you arrive. Both lines offer priority embarkation for suite guests and loyalty members.

Pack a carry-on day bag with essentials

You probably know this one, but it bears repeating: regardless of which line you're sailing, your checked luggage won't arrive at your cabin until mid-to-late afternoon. Pack swimsuits, sunscreen, any medications, phone chargers, and a change of clothes in a bag you carry on board. You'll want to start enjoying the ship immediately.

Disney: Download the My Disney Cruise Line app. Norwegian: Download the NCL app. MSC: Download MSC for Me. All require online check-in before arrival — don't wait until the terminal.
